REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir reiterated his commitment to maximize the preparation of the Indonesian contingent for the 2026 Asian Games. Although the budget for national training (pelatnas) has decreased compared to previous editions, the government is still trying to maintain Indonesia's achievement target at Asia's largest sporting event.

The commitment was conveyed by Erick during a working meeting with Commission X of DPR RI at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (2/6/2026). According to Erick, the tournament budget for the 2026 Asian Games is down quite significantly compared to preparations for the 2022 Asian Games. If it previously reached about Rp389.8 billion, now the available budget is Rp81 billion.

Nevertheless, he ensured that the allocation of funds for the departure of the Indonesian contingent remains a priority so that athletes can perform optimally in the event.

Erick explained that Indonesia is targeting four gold medals at the 2026 Asian Games. The number is lower than the seven gold medals won at the 2022 Asian Games because a number of the numbers that were previously Indonesia's medal barrack are no longer contested.

He mentioned the three numbers removed from the game program were the 10-meter running target and the 10-meter mixed target running from the shooting branch, as well as the traditional boat race.

“At the 2022 Asian Games, Indonesia won seven golds. The target has now decreased because the three match numbers are no longer being matched. With the current conditions, plus there are three match numbers that are not contested, then our target at this year's Asian Games is four gold medals,” Erick said.

To achieve this target, Kemenpora has coordinated with various national sports stakeholders. Erick said it had met with a number of sports branches, the Indonesian National Sports Committee, as well as the Indonesian Olympic Committee to work out the best strategy for maintaining Indonesia's competitiveness at the Asian level.

He also hopes for greater support from various parties, especially in relation to funding and coaching athletes. According to him, adequate attention is essential to support the needs of athletes and coaches who have been struggling to carry Indonesia's name on the international scene.

On the occasion, Erick also appreciated the role of a number of figures who actively support national sports coaching. Among them are Rosan Roeslani who leads the All Indonesia Weightlifting Union and Yenny Wahid who serves as the General Chairman of the Indonesian Climbing Federation.

Erick hopes that more stakeholders are involved in the development of the national sport so that Indonesia's achievements in international events can continue to increase and be sustained.
