Liverpool announce Andy Robertson will leave at the end of the season

Andy Robertson is to bring his illustrious Liverpool career to a close at the end of the season, the club have confirmed.

The 32-year-old is out of contract this summer and will follow another renowned player of the Jürgen Klopp era, Mohamed Salah, in leaving Anfield on a free transfer. Napoli, Juventus, Atlético Madrid and Tottenham are all keen on signing the Scotland captain, who rejected a move to Atlético last summer.

Robertson joined Liverpool for £8m from Hull in 2017 and went on to establish himself as one of the club’s greatest full-backs. He has made 373 appearances for Liverpool and won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Club World Cup and the Uefa Super Cup.

The defender, who has lost his regular starting role to Milos Kerkez this season, said the time was right to move on. “It’s never easy leaving a club like Liverpool,” said Robertson. “It has been a huge part of mine and my family’s life for the last nine years.

“I think it has been well documented, especially over the last year or so, I’ve had opportunities to leave and I’ve not taken them because of how difficult it is to leave this club. And I wouldn’t change that for the world. But I know football moves on, I know teams move on and I think now is the time for me to move on and go wherever my next move is and wherever my career takes me.

“I’ll always look back on amazing memories at this football club, I’ve put my heart and soul into the club for nine years and I’ve not got many regrets. I’ve grown as a man and as a person. This club will always mean the world to me, the fans will mean the world to me. It has been a hell of a journey.”

2012 - 2014

Setbacks and breakthrough in Scotland

Having been released by Celtic at 15, Robertson joins amateur side Queen's Park for the 2012-13 season. Youth coaches encourage him to play at left-back instead of further forward, and he holds down a first-team place while working part-time on the tills at a Marks & Spencer in Glasgow.

Robertson's displays earn him a move to Dundee United in June 2013. He helps his new club finish fourth in the Premiership and reach the Scottish Cup final, losing to St Johnstone. Robertson wins the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award and makes his Scotland debut against Poland in March 2014.

2014 - 2017

Ups and downs with Hull City

At the age of 20, Robertson joins Premier League side Hull on a three-year deal but can not prevent the Tigers from being relegated in his first season. Hull rebound to seal an immediate return to the top flight, with Robertson playing 52 games in the 2015-16 season. His performances alongside Harry Maguire earn interest from Everton, who opt against pursuing a £20m double deal.

2017 - 2020

Major milestones with Liverpool and Scotland

Jürgen Klopp brings Robertson to Liverpool for an £8m fee in July 2017, and he develops a dynamic full-back partnership with Trent Alexander-Arnold. Robertson plays all 90 minutes in the 2018 Champions League final loss to Real Madrid, and is named Scotland captain by Alex McLeish in September.

Robertson signs a new Liverpool deal in January 2019 and plays the full game as the club seal a sixth European title, beating Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid. Klopp's side finally claim a Premier League crown in the Covid-hit 2019-20 season, while Robertson leads Scotland to Euro 2020 qualification.

2021 - 2024

More trophies and missed opportunities

After Scotland fail to win a game at the Euro 2020 finals, Robertson signs a new five-year Liverpool contract in August 2021. He scores in penalty shootout wins over Chelsea to win the FA and League Cups, but Liverpool come up just short in the league and Champions League final against Real Madrid.

In December 2022, Robertson becomes the defender with the most assists in Premier League history, with 54. The left-back captains Liverpool against Wolves in September 2023, and leads Scotland to Euro 2024 qualification a month later. In January 2024, Klopp announces he will leave Anfield at the end of the season.

New era, second title and World Cup joy

Scotland fail to get out of their group at Euro 2024, while Arne Slot's arrival at Anfield signals a more defensive approach for Liverpool's full-backs. Slot delivers the Premier League title in his first season, with Robertson making 45 appearances in all competitions.

In November 2025, Robertson is captain as Scotland beat Denmark to secure a World Cup place. At club level, he has to battle for his left-back spot with Milos Kerkez and scores against Atlético in the Champions League. In April 2026, Robertson confirms he will leave Liverpool in the summer after almost nine years.

Robertson is one of the most popular figures of the modern era at Liverpool and remains a hugely influential presence in the dressing room. A return to Scotland is not thought to be in Robertson’s plans at this stage.
